50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy 2010-11 registration opens

In Florida, Biofuels Digest announced the launch of its annual “50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” rankings process. The rankings, which launched in 2008, are now cited in more than 19,000 web pages, according to the latest Google sweep, and attract thousands of votes from Digest readers as well as the international panel of selectors who vote each November.

Here’s background for 2010/2011.

1. Scoring. The rankings will be published on Wednesday, December 1st, and are based on weighted scores. 40 percent of the score will be based on subscriber polling, and 60 percent will be based on polling of more than 100+ international selectors drawn from academia, policy analysts, journalists, and industry leaders.

2. Eligibility. Eligible companies include bioenergy producers and their suppliers in business as of November 1, 2010, in all countries of the world. Producers are required to be at least at bench-scale in their development, with pilot-scale or higher preferred. Companies that have activities outside of bioenergy will be considered on the merits of their bioenergy business units.

3. Criteria. The criteria are: potential impact of the company and its technology, credibility and visibility.

4. Voter eligibility. Only registered subscribers to the Biofuels Digest e-newsletter are eligible to participate. Web-based Digest readers may continue to participate in voting for “the Biofuels Personality of the Year”.

5. Invited international selectors. The Digest will finalize its list of international selectors on Monday August 23rd. If you would like to serve as a selector, please download the selector nomination form here. Non-US selectors are especially encouraged to nominate, as we are significantly expanding our non-US panel this year.

6. Registration and nomination. Companies should register for the rankings process, though registration is not a requirement to be ranked. All registered companies will be included in the Selectors Data Book for 2010/11, and for selected companies, may be profiled in Biofuels Digest or its affiliated publications during the nominations and voting period. 7. Commencing Monday, August 9, 2010, the Digest will profile and analyze candidates for the Hot 50 in the daily newsletter.

8. Voting Period. The nominations period will be open from today through October 31, 2010, and voting will commence for the panel of international selectors on Monday, November 1st. Subscriber voting will open up on November 3rd, and will continue through Monday November 22nd.

In Belgium, World Biofuels Markets has announced its dates for 2011, and will be held March 22-24 in Rotterdam. Over 250 global biofuels leaders will share their experiences during 3 days of high level keynotes and panel discussions, which will include a total of 11 co-located conferences focused on energy crops, trading, standards, sustainability & certification, forest biofuels, biorefineries, biopower generation and biogas among other topics.

HECO gains Hawaii PUC OK for biodiesel test burn for power gen

In Hawaii, the state Public Utilities Commission has approved Hawaiian Electric Company’s plan to test biofuel blends in a 90-megawatt steam turbine generating unit at Kahe Power Plant that presently runs on low sulfur fuel oil (LSFO). The PUC gave the utility permission to spend up to $4.7 million on new equipment including pumps and motors, a motor control center, valves and filters and a mixing station to blend biofuel and LSFO. The equipment will be useful beyond the end of the test, no matter the outcome. In addition, the PUC approved a contract for Sime Darby, a Malaysian multi-national corporation, to supply 1.575 million gallons of biofuel to be shipped to Kalaeloa Harbor and moved by pipeline to Kahe power plant.

Northeast Biomass Conference & Expo to convene in Boston August 4-6

In Massachusetts, the The Northeast BIOMASS Conference & Expo will be held August 4-6, 2010 at the Westin Copley Place in Boston.

The goal? To connect the area’s current and future producers of biomass-derived electricity, industrial heat and power, and advanced biofuels, with waste generators, aggregators, growers, municipal leaders, utility executives, technology providers, equipment manufacturers, investors and policy makers. The Northeast U.S. has vast forestry, agricultural and municipal biomass resources, and is home to hundreds of technologically progressive biomass power, biofuels and biomass thermal energy projects.

According to the organizers, “The sustainable utilization of forestry and wood processing residues — from manufacturing wood pellets in Maine and New York to converting pulp and paper mills to next-generation biorefineries in New Hampshire and Vermont — is only the beginning.”

CEOs, policymakers and industry to gather at the Digest’s Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference – April 27, 2010 in Washington DC

Readers: The Digest’s Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference will be held on April 27-28, 2010 at the Hilton Embassy Row in Washington DC, which will feature the largest assemblage of CEOs of the “50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy” as I believe have ever gathered in one room at one time.

The conference agenda is here – involving CEOs and senior leadership in advanced bioenergy – as well as Administration officials from USDA, DOE and EPA – in what we hope will be the most rewarding event focused on advanced biofuels policy, finance, commercialization and R&D.
