Oak Ridge, Dartmouth researchers develop largest biomass database
In New Hampshire, researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Dartmouth College have released results from the largest database ever analyzed and compiled for energy crop yield comparisons, in relation to geographically distributed variables. These variables include site location, plot size, stand age, harvest frequency, fertilizer application, climate, and soil quality.
The researchers compiled nearly 1,200 biomass yield observations for both lowland and upland types of switchgrass grown on 39 different field sites across the US. The data showed that the variation in switchgrass yields could be mostly accounted for by variation in growing season precipitation, annual temperature, nitrogen fertilization and the type of switchgrass grown in a specific region.
