South West College in Northern Ireland sources heat from biomass
In the UK, South West College in Northern Ireland is the first educational institution on the island to source heat from a biomass project. The college has contracted with Rural Generation in Londonderry in a deal that is expected to save the school $38,000 annually.
The college first installed a biomass boiler in 2006, which accounted for 25% of the school’s heating needs and it recently installed another 250kw boiler bringing the total biomass heat use to 70%. Short crop willow is chipped and then used as feedstock for the boilers.
