Polish power exchange Polpx aims to commence biomass trading by year-end

In Poland, Polish power exchange Polpx hopes to begin trading biomass by the end of the year in hopes of creating a pricing structure for biomass power producers in the country. Poland’s biomass industry currently is very fragmented and needs more pricing transparency. Currently the average price of biomass is $106 per metric ton.

Last year, the country produced 4.1TWh from biomass, up 51% on the year, and Polpx expects that number to grow an additional 50% this year. The increased demand for biomass power has led to the company choosing biomass as its first traded commodity. The market consumes nearly 2.9 million tonnes of biomass, including 2.6 million tonnes of sawdust and 260,000 tonnes of agriculture-based biomass. It imports sawdust from Belarus and sunflower waste from the Ukraine.
