Nova Scotia heads for enviro, logger donnybrook over doubling of biomass power gen to 70 MW
In Canada, a government report is expected in Nova Scotia regarding the development of renewable energy for Nova Scotia. In hot dispute between loggers and environmental groups: the amount of green power produced from biomass to 70 MW, as the province aims to double its renewable power generation and reach a 25 percent target by 2015.
An interim report suggested that biomass would generate 15 percent in the near term with a longer term focus on wind farms. According to a report by CBC, Ecology Action Center has said that the amount of biomass needed to be aggregated to support the plan is unsustainable. Industry groups say that the proposed biomass required could be accumulated from dead and dying trees on old farm fields.
