$795 million biomass power project to break ground in South Carolina
In South Carolina, groundbreaking is scheduled Monday for a $795 million biomass plant that will produce 20 MW of power, plus steam that will be utilized at the Savannah River nuclear facility. The project will utilize 322,000 tons of wood waste and shredded tyres and is scheduled to open in December 2011.
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and U.S. Reps. Jim Clyburn, Joseph Wilson and John Barrow are among invited guests for the groundbreaking ceremony. Project management said that the facility will save up to $34 million and will reslt in the decommissioning of a coal-fired power station at the SIte.
